Friday, October 21st, 2011There is at least one feature on our bodies that we would like to change. However, many of us have fears and thus, never pursue our dream of improving our appearance. The plastic surgeons are hoping to allay these fears and minimize hesitation from potential patients with the new face of cosmetic surgery.
Look great, feel great!
It is reported that more and more people are turning to cosmetic surgery to rejuvenate their bodies and faces. For many people, changing the way they look can improve their whole view on life, and often gives them the confidence that they didn’t have before, as well. Here is a sample of some cosmetic procedures-
Breast augmentation
Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure to cosmetically enhance the size and shape of a woman’s breasts, using implants. The insertion of prosthesis (breast implants) gives breasts a fuller and desired appearance.
Liposuction
Fat deposits which cannot be removed by diet or exercise usually occur in areas such as the chin, chest, stomach, sides, back and thighs. Liposuction is a fat removal procedure that aims to eradicate excessive stubborn fat from these areas. Liposuction should be thought of as a sculpting procedure that can change the contours of your body.
Eye Lid surgery
Eyelid surgery is a procedure to recontour and reshape the upper and/or lower eyelids by the trimming of excess skin and fat around the eye area to achieve a more youthful and rejuvenated appearance to the area of your face that is most engaging with respect to personal interaction.
Rhinoplasty
Rhinoplasty, or surgery to reshape the nose, is one of the most common of all cosmetic surgery procedures. Rhinoplasty can reduce or increase the size of your nose, change the shape of the tip or the bridge, narrow the span of the nostrils or change the angle between your nose and your upper lip.
Tummy tuck
The shape and contour of the abdomen is of concern to many people. Both men and women express concern about lower tummy bulges, and sagging skin. A Tummy Tuck or Abdominoplasty is a procedure that will remove excess fat and skin from around the waist and will leave a flatter and younger-looking abdomen.
Brow Lift
brow lift is a subtle lifting of the skin of the forehead, often combined with some removal of underlying muscle and tissue to give a more youthful appearance to the upper part of the face. Surgery will correct drooping of eyebrows, loose skin and give some improvement to facial lines.
Risk and possible complications of plastic surgery
Fortunately, significant complications from cosmetic surgery are infrequent. Every year, many thousands of plastic surgeries are performed with no major problems and outstanding results. However, everyone considering surgery should be aware of both the benefits and risks.
Maintaining a healthy relationship with your cosmetic surgeon
Should there be any questions regarding cosmetic surgery; be sure they are answered well in advance. Find out everything before proceeding with the operation – a well informed patient is a happy one.

Dr. Cannova – Success equals improved self image
Friday, September 23rd, 2011Kansas City native Joseph Cannova, Jr., M.D. joined APSKC in 1998, a tenure that has allowed him to develop and refine his skills in cosmetic surgery and breast reconstruction.
Doctor Cannova says his interest in plastic surgery emerged during his first year as a surgical resident. From that point forward he worked towards becoming a plastic surgeon.
Now, as an experienced plastic surgeon, Doctor Cannova devotes his time to listening to the patients and identifying what surgery is going to bring the best outcome. “I feel like if you listen to the patient ahead of time and find out what their specific needs and wants are, you can match a surgery to those desires.” This allows the patient to experience a change in how they see themselves and boosts self confidence.
Doctor Cannova identifies Body(Slim Lipo) and breast contouring as his major areas of focus. Everything from tummy tuck and liposuction to breast augmentation and body lift can be offered to patients depending on their circumstances. For Doctor Cannova, successfully completing a procedure is about more than fixing what a patient may see as a physical flaw. “With some of these procedures you can change the way a patient thinks about herself and her self image, you can boost her confidence,” he says. “The patient may not change how she is doing things but the surgery gives her the confidence to approach life differently.”
As plastic surgery procedures continue to evolve Doctor Cannova says he offers more outpatient surgeries. “We can take old techniques and turn them into modern procedures that can give you the same outcomes with less down time, less expense, and less anesthesia,” he says, “with in-office face lifts becoming an increasingly popular option.
USA Today Investigation Into Plastic Surgery
Monday, September 19th, 2011
Last week USA Today published two investigations into plastic surgery. The stories discuss the importance of having a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon perform your surgery. The American Board of Medical Specialties sets the standards for the education, lifelong training and testing of doctors. ABMS member boards include the American Board of Plastic Surgery but none of the other cosmetic surgery boards, including the similar sounding American Board of Cosmetic Surgery. To be board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery you must have done a residency in plastic surgery unlike the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery. To read the entire story click here.
Tips for picking a Plastic Surgeon:
What’s he or she board certified in? Be sure they are Board Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery
How many times overall and recently has the doctor performed the surgery you are considering? Do they have privileges at a hospital to perform this surgery? You want your doctor to be performing a good number of the surgery you are considering. Even if your surgery is planned to be done in the office your doctor should have privileges at a hospital to do the same surgery. Hospitals have credentialing committees where panels of doctors screen other physicians to make sure they are qualified to do the surgery.
Ask your friends and doctors (such as your internal medicine doctor, your ob gyn) for referrals to a plastic surgeon. Word of mouth from your friends who have had plastic surgery is an excellent way to find out their experience with a plastic surgeon. Your doctors can give you referrals to plastic surgeons that they are familiar with their work.
