USA Today Investigation Into Plastic Surgery

Monday, September 19th, 2011

Last week USA Today published two investigations into plastic surgery. The stories discuss the importance of having a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon perform your surgery. The American Board of Medical Specialties sets the standards for the education, lifelong training and testing of doctors. ABMS member boards include the American Board of Plastic Surgery but none of the other cosmetic surgery boards, including the similar sounding American Board of Cosmetic Surgery. To be board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery you must have done a residency in plastic surgery unlike the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery.  To read the entire story click here.

Tips for picking a Plastic Surgeon:

What’s he or she board certified in?   Be sure they are Board Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery

How many times overall and recently has the doctor performed the surgery you are considering?  Do they have privileges at a hospital to perform this surgery?  You want your doctor to be performing a good number of the surgery you are considering.  Even if your surgery is planned to be done in the office your doctor should have privileges at a hospital to do the same surgery.  Hospitals have credentialing committees where panels of doctors screen other physicians to make sure they are qualified to do the surgery.

Ask your friends and doctors (such as your internal medicine doctor, your ob gyn) for referrals to a plastic surgeon.  Word of mouth from your friends who have had plastic surgery is an excellent way to find out their experience with a plastic surgeon.  Your doctors can give you referrals to plastic surgeons that they are familiar with their work.

A recommendation from a doctor is an honor

APS was recently informed of an article written by Brenda Smith, M.D. that was published in Briarcliff Life magazine.  Dr. Smith is a well respected obstetrician/gynecolgist  who has practiced in the Kansas City area since 1990.  The article is titled “Dr. Smith’s Favorite Women’s Health Services”.  Below is an excerpt from Dr. Smith’s article.

“We all know how hard it is to sort through an insurance list of providers and pick one.  I am the first to admit that the healthcare system needs overhauling and patients are often disappointed at the level of care & caring they get in the typical, impersonal, time consuming and disorienting visit to a healthcare provider or facility.  That’s why over the years, I have collected information about positive healthcare experiences – not only personally, but information gleaned from my patients experiences.  I always take the time to ask my patients about their satisfaction with health services.  This has resulted in a notebook I keep with information on providers/facilities that consistently get good reviews.

The following list is a hodge-podge of services I have pulled from my preferred, health provider’s notebook.

Plastic Surgeons

Dr. Philip Gutek & Dr. Joseph Cannova, Jr.

Associated Plastic Surgeons

One of the interesting things about my job is that I get to see everyone’s plastic surgery and over the years a few surgeons and their work has caught my attention.  Dr. Gutek has been, in my opinion, the reigning facelift surgeon for years. His facelifts look so natural.  He has not only great technical skills, but also an artistic eye.  As an added benefit, he is an old-fashioned, true gentleman-type surgeon not the overr-the-top-type plastic surgeons so common on TV.

When it comes to breast work – augmentation, reduction, reconstruction after mastectomy, I have seen some really consistent & excellent work by Dr. Joseph Cannova, Jr. who actually works in the same plastic surgery group as Dr. Gutek.”

APS would like to that Dr. Smith for her kind words!
