Lee National Denim Day

Tuesday, October 16th, 2012

Associated Plastic Surgeons patient, Debbie is the national spokesperson for Lee Denim Day. Lee Denim Day began in 1996. Employees can donate $5.00 to wear jeans to work for a day in October. The proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society and the fight against breast cancer. Since it’s first year, Lee National Denim Day has raised more than $86 million for the fight against breast cancer and unites nearly one million supporters nationwide.

Courageous and calm, Debbie lives in Missouri, where she continues her fight against breast cancer. Since she was forty, Debbie has had her yearly mammogram and at 46, cancer was discovered in her left breast. After a double mastectomy, cancer cells still remained. With determination, Debbie began chemotherapy in April 2012. Though sometimes overwhelmed, Debbie attributes her never-ending optimism and perseverance to her supportive husband, Jeff, and two loving daughters. Debbie knows she couldn’t continue her fight without her family, and asks you to join a team today to help fight cancer with Lee Jeans and the American Cancer Society. Please watch Debbie’s video to see her touching story.

Dr. Cannova – Success equals improved self image

Friday, September 23rd, 2011

Kansas City native Joseph Cannova, Jr., M.D. joined APSKC in 1998, a tenure that has allowed him to develop and refine his skills in cosmetic surgery and breast reconstruction.

Doctor Cannova says his interest in plastic surgery emerged during his first year as a surgical resident. From that point forward he worked towards becoming a plastic surgeon.

Now, as an experienced plastic surgeon, Doctor Cannova devotes his time to listening to the patients and identifying what surgery is going to bring the best outcome. “I feel like if you listen to the patient ahead of time and find out what their specific needs and wants are, you can match a surgery to those desires.” This allows the patient to experience a change in how they see themselves and boosts self confidence.

Doctor Cannova identifies Body(Slim Lipo) and breast contouring as his major areas of focus. Everything from tummy tuck and liposuction to breast augmentation and body lift can be offered to patients depending on their circumstances. For Doctor Cannova, successfully completing a procedure is about more than fixing what a patient may see as a physical flaw. “With some of these procedures you can change the way a patient thinks about herself and her self image, you can boost her confidence,” he says. “The patient may not change how she is doing things but the surgery gives her the confidence to approach life differently.”

As plastic surgery procedures continue to evolve Doctor Cannova says he offers more outpatient surgeries. “We can take old techniques and turn them into modern procedures that can give you the same outcomes with less down time, less expense, and less anesthesia,” he says, “with in-office face lifts becoming an increasingly popular option.

Dr. Young: ‘My goal’ is ‘the best outcome possible’

Friday, August 12th, 2011

Sheryl L. Young, M.D., F.A.C.S., says she picked plastic surgery as a career because of the variety. “It’s never boring, and no two people are the same,” she says. “It’s one of the few fields of medicine where you can offer your services to men and women, as well as several age groups. And I love the problem-solving, whether it’s cosmetic or reconstruction—can you get the patient to the desired result?”

The Baton Rouge, La.-native credits her high-school science teacher for inspiring her to pursue a career in the medical industry. “She encouraged me to go to our local hospital and volunteer,” Dr. Young says. “I was too old to be a candy striper at that point, so the coordinator put me in physical therapy.”

From there, Dr. Young worked as a summer physical therapy assistant in college, and then enrolled in medical school at Tulane University. As a medical student, Dr. Young worked with a plastic surgeon in Baton Rouge, an experience that affirmed Dr. Young’s desire to become a plastic surgeon.
Dr. Young joined the APS-KC staff 14 years ago. During that time, she says the majority of her patients have been female. “I think I have different insight than some of my partners do because I’m a female, and I can work with and relate to women,” she says. A large part of Dr. Young’s practice is breast surgery, including augmentation, reduction and reconstruction. Dr. Young also performs a number of eyelid surgeries, as well as abdominoplasties. Regardless of the procedure, Dr. Young’s philosophy is ensuring each patient receives optimum results. “We’re committed to try to get everyone to the best outcome possible,” she says.

Emerging technology is an important part of plastic surgery, but Dr. Young says the newest products aren’t always the best—instead, she focuses on what will provide the best results. “We like to offer new techniques, but we want to be sure they give good results before we do,” she says. “We may not be the first on the cutting-edge bandwagon because we want to ensure that we offer consistent, good results.”

A newer procedure that’s proven to be effective is SlimLipo, a laser-based body sculpting procedure that’s less invasive than traditional liposuction. SlimLipo can help patients achieve optimal body sculpting results in a variety of areas, which aligns with Dr. Young’s philosophy in regard to delivering a natural, high-quality outcome.

“My goal is to get you to a natural result that makes you look fit and rejuvenated,” she says.
