Abdominoplasty : The quest for an ‘aesthetically pleasing abdomen’

Friday, January 27th, 2012

Quite often, looking good is feeling good. If you’re not satisfied with the way you look you are not likely to feel good about yourself on an emotional level. Call it what you will- love handles, tummy bulge, saggy skin or a muffin top, the bottom line is excesses abdominal skin and fat. You’ve tried diet and exercise, but you still haven’t achieved the results you desire. Some choose to live with it, others choose abdominoplasty.

What is it?

Abdominoplasty, known more commonly as a “tummy tuck,” is a surgical procedure to remove excess skin and fat from the middle and lower abdomen. The procedure can dramatically improve the appearance of flabby, stretched-out abdominal muscles and skin. It also reduces the appearance of a protruding abdomen and, in some cases, restores weakened or separated muscles.

Why do it?

There are countless benefits of a tummy tuck. A tummy tuck can:

  • Tighten loose abdominal muscles and remove excess skin caused by heredity, pregnancy, prior surgery, significant fluctuations in weight or congenital spine abnormalities that affect posture
  • Improve your body contour by removing unwanted skin and fat also known as the “abdominal apron”
  • Create an abdominal profile that is firmer and smoother, often enhancing your body image and confidence
  • Enhance the fit and appearance of clothes
  • Create a natural-looking, attractive abdomen

Who is the ideal candidate?

There are many personal reason’s for under going the surgery. It is especially common for women who have lost tone and elasticity after pregnancy or for men experiencing a separation of the abdominal wall and the muscle as a result of surplus fat. Ideal candidates include:

  • Women who have had multiple pregnancies
  • Men and women who were once obese and have excess skin caused by significant weight loss
  • Older people who have lost skin elasticity from aging
  • People who are genetically predisposed to the accumulation of abdominal fat.
  • Those who have a lot of fat in an isolated area

Abdominoplasty is a great way to to achieve the firmer, flatter abdomen you’ve always wanted. However, as with all surgery there are risks involved. Abdominoplasty does leave a permanent scar and requires diet and exercise to better maintain the results. It is not meant for individuals that are significantly overweight. Be sure to consult with your surgeon.

Blepharoplasty – The other name for eye-lid surgery

Friday, November 11th, 2011

They say our eyes are the focal point of the face and when we interact with others eye contact is perhaps the most prominent way we express ourselves. Bright open eyes convey beauty, vigor, and youth.  However, eyes that sag due to excess skin and are puffy due to excess fat convey a tired appearance even though you may feel energetic and rested.

Eye-lid surgery also known as blepharoplasty can help patients treat excess drooping skin, or eyes that look tired due to puffiness or bags. Although the decision to undertake eye-lid surgery can be extremely personal, the results often exceed patient expectations in terms of appearance and, perhaps even more importantly, function.

Eye-lid surgery before and after

Photographs are usually taken before and after surgery to plan the procedure and record your results. While examining blepharoplasty before and after photos, look for pictures of patients whose “before” photo resembles your current expectation and see if the “after” photo matches your idea of a positive eye-surgical outcome. When you and your surgeon have the same expectations before eye-lid surgery it makes the process less nerve-racking, and helps the surgeon know exactly what you are wanting out of the procedure.

All surgeries carry some risk

Thousands of successful eye-lid surgeries are performed each year. While the procedures are generally safe when performed by a qualified and experienced Blepharoplasty cosmetic surgeon, complications may arise.  However, in almost all types of eye surgeries, the possible complications are infrequent and can generally be treated.

What does Blepharoplasty cost?

Prior to getting eye-lid surgery done, a consultation with an eye-lid surgeon is essential to discuss your options. These consultations generally take 30-45 minutes.  After your consultation, you will be provided with a cost estimate of your surgery including surgical, anaesthetic and hospital fees.

Some myths surrounding the eye-lid surgery

Perhaps no form of surgery is more popular and safe than eye lid surgery, thanks to a major change in the kind of techniques that are now employed. But, there are myths and misconceptions that a patient must be fully aware of before making an informed decision.

Let’s take a look at a handful of myths about eye-lid surgery-

  • Eye lid surgery is a painful surgery that requires a lot of time  off work
  • Eye lid surgery is for the elderly
  • Eye Lid surgery is not safe
  • Eye lid surgery will gain you ugly bruises
  • Eye lid surgery is only for rich people
  • Eye lid surgery cannot be combined with other surgical procedures such as facelift, brow lift and neck lift

Taking time to think over the procedure, working with your eye-lid surgeon and researching is imperative to separate facts from the myths. Who knows, when you will look at yourself in the mirror after blepharoplasty, you may see a beautiful you.

COSMETIC SURGERY- MANY OPTIONS TO CONSIDER

Friday, October 21st, 2011

There is at least one feature on our bodies that we would like to change. However, many of us have fears and thus, never pursue our dream of improving our appearance. The plastic surgeons are hoping to allay these fears and minimize hesitation from potential patients with the new face of cosmetic surgery.

Look great, feel great!

It is reported that more and more people are turning to cosmetic surgery to rejuvenate their bodies and faces. For many people, changing the way they look can improve their whole view on life, and often gives them the confidence that they didn’t have before, as well. Here is a sample of some cosmetic procedures-

Breast augmentation

Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure to cosmetically enhance the size and shape of a woman’s breasts, using implants. The insertion of prosthesis (breast implants) gives breasts a fuller and desired appearance.

Liposuction

Fat deposits which cannot be removed by diet or exercise usually occur in areas such as the chin, chest, stomach, sides, back and thighs. Liposuction is a fat removal procedure that aims to eradicate excessive stubborn fat from these areas. Liposuction should be thought of as a sculpting procedure that can change the contours of your body.

Eye Lid surgery

Eyelid surgery is a procedure to recontour and reshape the upper and/or lower eyelids by the trimming of excess skin and fat around the eye area to achieve a more youthful and rejuvenated appearance to the area of your face that is most engaging with respect to personal interaction.

Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty, or surgery to reshape the nose, is one of the most common of all cosmetic surgery procedures. Rhinoplasty can reduce or increase the size of your nose, change the shape of the tip or the bridge, narrow the span of the nostrils or change the angle between your nose and your upper lip.

Tummy tuck

The shape and contour of the abdomen is of concern to many people. Both men and women express concern about lower tummy bulges, and sagging skin. A Tummy Tuck or Abdominoplasty is a procedure that will remove excess fat and skin from around the waist and will leave a flatter and younger-looking abdomen.

Brow Lift

brow lift is a subtle lifting of the skin of the forehead, often combined with some removal of underlying muscle and tissue to give a more youthful appearance to the upper part of the face. Surgery will correct drooping of eyebrows, loose skin and give some improvement to facial lines.

Risk and possible complications of plastic surgery

Fortunately, significant complications from cosmetic surgery are infrequent. Every year, many thousands of plastic surgeries are performed with no major problems and outstanding results. However, everyone considering surgery should be aware of both the benefits and risks.
