USA Today Investigation Into Plastic Surgery

Monday, September 19th, 2011

Last week USA Today published two investigations into plastic surgery. The stories discuss the importance of having a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon perform your surgery. The American Board of Medical Specialties sets the standards for the education, lifelong training and testing of doctors. ABMS member boards include the American Board of Plastic Surgery but none of the other cosmetic surgery boards, including the similar sounding American Board of Cosmetic Surgery. To be board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery you must have done a residency in plastic surgery unlike the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery.  To read the entire story click here.

Tips for picking a Plastic Surgeon:

What’s he or she board certified in?   Be sure they are Board Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery

How many times overall and recently has the doctor performed the surgery you are considering?  Do they have privileges at a hospital to perform this surgery?  You want your doctor to be performing a good number of the surgery you are considering.  Even if your surgery is planned to be done in the office your doctor should have privileges at a hospital to do the same surgery.  Hospitals have credentialing committees where panels of doctors screen other physicians to make sure they are qualified to do the surgery.

Ask your friends and doctors (such as your internal medicine doctor, your ob gyn) for referrals to a plastic surgeon.  Word of mouth from your friends who have had plastic surgery is an excellent way to find out their experience with a plastic surgeon.  Your doctors can give you referrals to plastic surgeons that they are familiar with their work.

Reasons to consider breast reduction surgery

Friday, August 26th, 2011

There are some great reasons that speak for a breast reduction surgery. Breast reduction surgery removes excess breast fat, skin and glandular tissue to achieve a more proportionate, feminine size, shape, and contour. Women with excessively large breasts, not only face numerous embarrassments, but also suffer a great discomfort placed on their back, neck and shoulders. If you wish to improve your best shape and symmetry with increased confidence and self-esteem, breast reduction surgery is the safest way to reduce the size of your breasts and stay healthy.

What causes the excessively large breasts?

Over-sized breasts can cause physical, emotional and social discomfort. However, the exact causes of oversize breasts are not evidenced. There may be numerous factors that can play an important role in the development of excessively large breasts and its complications.
•Hormonal changes, such as during menstrual periods
•Heredity conditions
•Sedentary lifestyle
•Obesity
•Side effects of drugs and medications

Benefits of Breast Reduction Surgery

Reduce shoulder, neck, and back pains
When a woman’s breasts are too large to be supported by the body frame, the results can be uncomfortable, embarrassing, and painful. A significant number of women turn to breast reduction surgery to improve their physical appearance and to alleviate the discomfort placed on their back, neck and shoulders. Breast reduction surgery commonly known as mammaplasty reduces the size of your breasts and helps you avoid all the discomforts.

Improves your aesthetic appearance
It becomes extremely discomforting for women when their oversized breasts draw unwanted attentions. With the help of breast reduction surgery, one can live freely and feel more rested and contented. A breast reduction surgery can give your breasts the proper shape, making you look more attractive and feminine.

Improves flexibility
Women with oversized breasts find it hard to perform certain physical activities like jogging, exercising, swimming and many other activities. Since your body is burdened with excess weight, you get tired easily and this affects your capability to work. If you opt for breast reduction surgery, you will be able to participate in your favorite activities and work energetically.

Wear whatever you want
Sometimes, it becomes difficult for women with oversized breasts to find dresses in proportion to their body size. Breast reduction surgery reduces your breasts’ size and you can wear whatever you want to.

Quality care with an expert surgeon

In considering breast reduction surgery, it is essential to do your research and find the best surgeon. It is important to choose an experienced surgeon who will not only consider your personal desires, but also take into account your height, weight and natural breast size and shape.

According to medical researchers, breast reduction surgery is the best opportunity for women with oversized breasts to improve their quality of life, including physical and psychological health.

A recommendation from a doctor is an honor

APS was recently informed of an article written by Brenda Smith, M.D. that was published in Briarcliff Life magazine.  Dr. Smith is a well respected obstetrician/gynecolgist  who has practiced in the Kansas City area since 1990.  The article is titled “Dr. Smith’s Favorite Women’s Health Services”.  Below is an excerpt from Dr. Smith’s article.

“We all know how hard it is to sort through an insurance list of providers and pick one.  I am the first to admit that the healthcare system needs overhauling and patients are often disappointed at the level of care & caring they get in the typical, impersonal, time consuming and disorienting visit to a healthcare provider or facility.  That’s why over the years, I have collected information about positive healthcare experiences – not only personally, but information gleaned from my patients experiences.  I always take the time to ask my patients about their satisfaction with health services.  This has resulted in a notebook I keep with information on providers/facilities that consistently get good reviews.

The following list is a hodge-podge of services I have pulled from my preferred, health provider’s notebook.

Plastic Surgeons

Dr. Philip Gutek & Dr. Joseph Cannova, Jr.

Associated Plastic Surgeons

One of the interesting things about my job is that I get to see everyone’s plastic surgery and over the years a few surgeons and their work has caught my attention.  Dr. Gutek has been, in my opinion, the reigning facelift surgeon for years. His facelifts look so natural.  He has not only great technical skills, but also an artistic eye.  As an added benefit, he is an old-fashioned, true gentleman-type surgeon not the overr-the-top-type plastic surgeons so common on TV.

When it comes to breast work – augmentation, reduction, reconstruction after mastectomy, I have seen some really consistent & excellent work by Dr. Joseph Cannova, Jr. who actually works in the same plastic surgery group as Dr. Gutek.”

APS would like to that Dr. Smith for her kind words!

Rhinoplasty- The other name for nose surgery

Saturday, August 13th, 2011

It is not hard to believe the current marketing hype around nose surgery being a major achievement. At least, that’s what appears each time people take a look at the increasing acceptance of Rhinoplasty. Nose surgery also known as Rhinoplasty is the nation’s most commonly performed cosmetic surgery that refines a nose’s size and shape and improves interrupted breathing. The procedure is being considered by a growing number of people and is a well accepted option to improve both nose appearance and function.

Quest for beauty and health takes to Rhinoplasty
It is true that nothing has as great of an impact on how a person looks than the size and shape of the nose. There are several components to your nasal shape that you may wish to alter in some way, such as the profile from the side view, the length or width, or the shape of the tip. Although the decision to undertake nasal surgery can be daunting, the results often exceed patient expectations in terms of appearance and, perhaps even more importantly, function.

Am I a good candidate for Rhinoplasty?
You will begin the process with a doctor consultation where you will be asked many questions to ensure you are a good candidate for the procedure. Any of the following conditions may make you a good candidate for Rhinoplasty:
  • * Your nose looks too wide seen from the front
  • * The nasal tip droops
  • * You have to improve the symmetry of your nose
  • * You have to eliminate visible humps or depressions on the bridge of your nose
  • * You need to correct structural defects in the nose allowing you to breathe easier

Assuming you are in good health, there is no defined age for having your nose reshaped. The results of Rhinoplasty enhance the balance between the nose and other facial features.

Preparing for Rhinoplasty
It is important that you have a clear idea of how you would like your nose to look and, at the same time, realize that there are limitations to the procedure. During the initial consultation, you may be asked to point out exactly what you would like to see improved. This will help your surgeon understand your expectations and determine whether they can be realistically achieved.

Be sure to ask questions
It is very important to ask your cosmetic surgeon about your treatment. It is natural to feel some anxiety, whether it is excitement for your anticipated new look or a bit of preoperative stress. Don’t be shy about discussing these feelings with your surgeon.

All surgeries carry some uncertainty and risk
Thousands of successful nose operations are performed each year. While the procedures are generally safe when performed by a qualified and experienced Rhinoplasty cosmetic surgeon, complications can arise. However, in almost all types of nose surgeries, the possible complications are infrequent and can generally be treated. You can reduce your risks by choosing a qualified Rhinoplasty surgeon, such as one of our Associated Plastic Surgeons of Kansas City doctors, and closely follow his or her advice.

The decision to have nose surgery is extremely personal and you will have to decide if the benefits will fulfill your goals and if the risks and potential complications are acceptable. Your surgeon will explain in detail the risks associated with surgery. You will be asked to sign consent forms to ensure that you fully understand the procedure as well as review the instructions for a healthy recovery.

Be who you want to be!
Now that you have got a much better idea of what a nose surgery is like, you are ready to discover more by visiting our Rhinoplasty procedure page. You won’t just look better, you will feel incredible. Who knows, rhinoplasty can turn out to be an opportunity to help you reconstruct the beauty that’s already there in you.

Dr. Young: ‘My goal’ is ‘the best outcome possible’

Friday, August 12th, 2011

Sheryl L. Young, M.D., F.A.C.S., says she picked plastic surgery as a career because of the variety. “It’s never boring, and no two people are the same,” she says. “It’s one of the few fields of medicine where you can offer your services to men and women, as well as several age groups. And I love the problem-solving, whether it’s cosmetic or reconstruction—can you get the patient to the desired result?”

The Baton Rouge, La.-native credits her high-school science teacher for inspiring her to pursue a career in the medical industry. “She encouraged me to go to our local hospital and volunteer,” Dr. Young says. “I was too old to be a candy striper at that point, so the coordinator put me in physical therapy.”

From there, Dr. Young worked as a summer physical therapy assistant in college, and then enrolled in medical school at Tulane University. As a medical student, Dr. Young worked with a plastic surgeon in Baton Rouge, an experience that affirmed Dr. Young’s desire to become a plastic surgeon.
Dr. Young joined the APS-KC staff 14 years ago. During that time, she says the majority of her patients have been female. “I think I have different insight than some of my partners do because I’m a female, and I can work with and relate to women,” she says. A large part of Dr. Young’s practice is breast surgery, including augmentation, reduction and reconstruction. Dr. Young also performs a number of eyelid surgeries, as well as abdominoplasties. Regardless of the procedure, Dr. Young’s philosophy is ensuring each patient receives optimum results. “We’re committed to try to get everyone to the best outcome possible,” she says.

Emerging technology is an important part of plastic surgery, but Dr. Young says the newest products aren’t always the best—instead, she focuses on what will provide the best results. “We like to offer new techniques, but we want to be sure they give good results before we do,” she says. “We may not be the first on the cutting-edge bandwagon because we want to ensure that we offer consistent, good results.”

A newer procedure that’s proven to be effective is SlimLipo, a laser-based body sculpting procedure that’s less invasive than traditional liposuction. SlimLipo can help patients achieve optimal body sculpting results in a variety of areas, which aligns with Dr. Young’s philosophy in regard to delivering a natural, high-quality outcome.

“My goal is to get you to a natural result that makes you look fit and rejuvenated,” she says.
