A recommendation from a doctor is an honor

APS was recently informed of an article written by Brenda Smith, M.D. that was published in Briarcliff Life magazine.  Dr. Smith is a well respected obstetrician/gynecolgist  who has practiced in the Kansas City area since 1990.  The article is titled “Dr. Smith’s Favorite Women’s Health Services”.  Below is an excerpt from Dr. Smith’s article.

“We all know how hard it is to sort through an insurance list of providers and pick one.  I am the first to admit that the healthcare system needs overhauling and patients are often disappointed at the level of care & caring they get in the typical, impersonal, time consuming and disorienting visit to a healthcare provider or facility.  That’s why over the years, I have collected information about positive healthcare experiences – not only personally, but information gleaned from my patients experiences.  I always take the time to ask my patients about their satisfaction with health services.  This has resulted in a notebook I keep with information on providers/facilities that consistently get good reviews.

The following list is a hodge-podge of services I have pulled from my preferred, health provider’s notebook.

Plastic Surgeons

Dr. Philip Gutek & Dr. Joseph Cannova, Jr.

Associated Plastic Surgeons

One of the interesting things about my job is that I get to see everyone’s plastic surgery and over the years a few surgeons and their work has caught my attention.  Dr. Gutek has been, in my opinion, the reigning facelift surgeon for years. His facelifts look so natural.  He has not only great technical skills, but also an artistic eye.  As an added benefit, he is an old-fashioned, true gentleman-type surgeon not the overr-the-top-type plastic surgeons so common on TV.

When it comes to breast work – augmentation, reduction, reconstruction after mastectomy, I have seen some really consistent & excellent work by Dr. Joseph Cannova, Jr. who actually works in the same plastic surgery group as Dr. Gutek.”

APS would like to that Dr. Smith for her kind words!

Don’t Wait for the Lump

Monday, October 26th, 2009

As Breast Cancer Awareness month comes to a close, I wanted to take a moment to share a personal triumph of our very own patient, Brandi Palmer. Brandi is one of the great breast cancer survivors in my practice and has recently posted a very touching photo journal of her journey through mastectomy and breast reconstruction. I think it is a heartfelt personal look at her experience. It doesn’t sugar coat the reconstruction or the preoperative jitters. It does however show the joyful finishing photos as she reclaims her life as a wife and mother. I hope all of my patients and for that matter all women who have or are about to embark on this journey, will read her moving story at Smilebox.

We have included her “Don’t Wait for the Lump” video accompanied by Melissa Etheridge’s “I Run for Life” breast cancer tribute in this post.

Brandi is also feature in the October issue of 435 south magazine and talks in a little detail about the surgical experience and talks about her work with St.Luke’s South Hospital to advance the support services for women’s care. You may want to check this out as well.

This leads me to the subject of group support. When patients begin the reconstructive experience the support groups are so important. We are all scared of the unknown and this is an opportunity to have open discussion with folks who have finished the experience. It is an invaluable way to get some factual information about what is to come. As the journey continues I can begin to see the fear fall away until these women become the group leaders for the next women. My absolute favorite part is when we get to the end and I see the beaming face as each woman reclaims her femininity and resumes her life, cancer free. These are the moments that keep me operating and I thank each of you for this.

Remember October is breast cancer awareness month. This is a great reminder to get that mammogram done. Many of the great facilities I work at have walk in mammograms including St. Joseph’s Medical Center, St.Luke’s South Hospital and Menorah Medical Center. Get it done ladies and Don’t Wait for the Lump!!!

Dont Wait for the Lump

Brandi is also featured in the October issue of 435 south magazine and shares her surgical experience and talks about her work with St.Luke’s South Hospital to advance the support services for women’s care. The article begins with Brandi describing the boundless friendship that provided her the strength to fight what she simply refers to as “the beast.”
