Facelift
Facelift Description
Rhytidectomy, commonly known as a facelift, is a surgical procedure to improve visible signs of aging in the face and neck. A facelift will not change your basic appearance, but will restore it to a younger version that will then continue to age naturally over time. Facelift incisions often begin in the hairline at the temples, continue around the ear and end in the lower scalp. A second incision under the chin may be necessary to further improve an aging neck which is also known as a neck lift. Facelift surgery restores the midface, jowls and neck, allowing excess skin to be improved. A facelift can be complimented with a brow lift and/or eyelid surgery to rejuvenate aging eyes. The procedure is highly individualized and should be considered for your own personal reasons, not the desire of others.

Preparing for a Facelift
You will begin the process with a doctor consultation where you will be asked many questions to ensure you are a good candidate for the procedure. Health history, physical, likely outcomes and potential risks are a few examples of topics that will be discussed during your consultation. The doctor will fully educate you about surgical options such as limited incision techniques that are used to improve the midface region and non-surgical options such as injectables. The procedure will be conducted at a licensed surgical center in the Kansas City metropolitan area.
Facelift FAQ
HOW DO I KNOW I AM A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR A FACELIFT?
We recommend our patients be in good health and non-smokers to ensure successful healing. Facelifts are best suited for adult men and women who feel that their outward facial aging no longer reflects the youth and vigor they feel emotionally and physically. We also recommend our patients have a positive outlook with specific goals in mind for improving their image.
HOW LONG WILL A FACELIFT RECOVERY TAKE?
Following all doctors’ instructions is essential to successful recovery. You will need someone to drive you home following the procedure and stay with you the first night. A bandage will gently be placed around your face following the procedure to minimize swelling and bruising. You may experience numbness, bruising and discomfort which are common with a facelift procedure. Any discomfort you experience can typically be controlled with medication. A return to light, normal activity is usually possible within a few days of surgery and you can expect to return to work sometime between 2 to 4 weeks.
WHAT ARE THE LONG-TERM EFFECTS?
Healing continues for at least several weeks as swelling resolves and incision lines continue to improve. You must practice diligent sun protection until the healing process is fully complete. Wrinkle reduction by injection (Botox) may be recommended to maintain results.
WILL MY “NEW” FACE LAST FOREVER?
Lifelong sun protection will help to maintain your rejuvenated appearance by minimizing photo-aging or sun damage. A healthy lifestyle will also help extend the results of your more youthful appearance. Most patients find that the benefits of their initial facelift results are long-lasting, even as they continue to age.
