A Kansas City native, Dr. Joseph Cannova Jr. finds the diversity and complexity of issues in plastic surgery rewarding. He delights in knowing that his skills, training and expertise can improve the quality of life for his patients.

Cannova also understands the complexity of issues in post-mastectomy patients. Skilled in breast reconstruction using the “microvascular TRAM flap” procedure, he has helped hundreds of women surmount breast cancer.
EDUCATION: Cannova received his undergraduate and medical degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. He completed a general surgery residency at St. Luke’s Medical Center, in Cleveland, Ohio.
While he worked in the Burn Unit at the Cleveland medical center, he was intrigued by the transformative nature of plastic surgery in healing. He went on to pursue training in plastic surgery at the School of Medicine at the University of South Carolina.
PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATION AND RECOGNITION: Cannova has delivered presentations on plastic surgery at industry conferences and has published papers.
He is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and he is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons.
PERSONAL PERSPECTIVE: Cannova also works at Children’s Mercy Hospital and enjoys sharing information on cosmetic procedures to area community organizations.
Cannova and his wife live in Leawood; both are active runners and frequently run together.
Just as in his professional career, Cannova enjoys diverse challenges in his fitness routine. Cannova regularly competes in triathlons, including the 2009 Kansas City Triathlon.

Cannova is a member of the board of the Medical Missions Foundation of Kansas City and has participated in four missions to Romania and Guatemala. He previously worked at Children’s Mercy Hospital.
Cannova and his wife and two children live in Leawood. He enjoys active time with his family. Fitness is important to Cannova, and he regularly competes in triathlons, including the 2009 Kansas City Triathlon, and half-marathons, including the 2009 Kansas City Marathon.
