Abdominoplasty : The quest for an ‘aesthetically pleasing abdomen’

Friday, January 27th, 2012

Quite often, looking good is feeling good. If you’re not satisfied with the way you look you are not likely to feel good about yourself on an emotional level. Call it what you will- love handles, tummy bulge, saggy skin or a muffin top, the bottom line is excesses abdominal skin and fat. You’ve tried diet and exercise, but you still haven’t achieved the results you desire. Some choose to live with it, others choose abdominoplasty.

What is it?

Abdominoplasty, known more commonly as a “tummy tuck,” is a surgical procedure to remove excess skin and fat from the middle and lower abdomen. The procedure can dramatically improve the appearance of flabby, stretched-out abdominal muscles and skin. It also reduces the appearance of a protruding abdomen and, in some cases, restores weakened or separated muscles.

Why do it?

There are countless benefits of a tummy tuck. A tummy tuck can:

  • Tighten loose abdominal muscles and remove excess skin caused by heredity, pregnancy, prior surgery, significant fluctuations in weight or congenital spine abnormalities that affect posture
  • Improve your body contour by removing unwanted skin and fat also known as the “abdominal apron”
  • Create an abdominal profile that is firmer and smoother, often enhancing your body image and confidence
  • Enhance the fit and appearance of clothes
  • Create a natural-looking, attractive abdomen

Who is the ideal candidate?

There are many personal reason’s for under going the surgery. It is especially common for women who have lost tone and elasticity after pregnancy or for men experiencing a separation of the abdominal wall and the muscle as a result of surplus fat. Ideal candidates include:

  • Women who have had multiple pregnancies
  • Men and women who were once obese and have excess skin caused by significant weight loss
  • Older people who have lost skin elasticity from aging
  • People who are genetically predisposed to the accumulation of abdominal fat.
  • Those who have a lot of fat in an isolated area

Abdominoplasty is a great way to to achieve the firmer, flatter abdomen you’ve always wanted. However, as with all surgery there are risks involved. Abdominoplasty does leave a permanent scar and requires diet and exercise to better maintain the results. It is not meant for individuals that are significantly overweight. Be sure to consult with your surgeon.

Introducing Slim Lipo

Friday, July 1st, 2011

Removing unwanted fat from your body by way of a minimally invasive procedure is now a reality thanks to SlimLipo, a laser-based body sculpting procedure that offers many benefits over traditional liposuction.

SlimLipo targets problem areas with laser wavelengths that liquefy fat. A few tiny incisions are made, and the liquefied fat is removed from the body using a medical suction device.

Because SlimLipo is much less invasive than traditional liposuction, most patients only require a local anesthetic before the procedure. And the recovery time is much shorter, too, with some patients reporting that they could return to work the next day.

SlimLipo is ideal for both men and women and can be used over the whole body.

Common treatment areas include upper arms, chin, neck, stomach, back, buttocks, chin, love handles and thighs.

“It’s an excellent option, especially for younger people,” says Dr. E. Philip Gutek. “It’s great for areas like a full neck, and can rejuvenate that area so the patient can look better.”

SlimLipo is one of the newer treatments available at Associated Plastic Surgeons, keeping in line with the clinic’s commitment to offering the latest in plastic surgery procedures.

“That’s one of the exciting things about plastic surgery,” says Dr. Gutek. “It’s constantly evolving.”

A New You for 2010

Thursday, December 24th, 2009

Congratulations in the New Year to all of you who are making the commitment to lose weight and/or reshape your body during 2010. While the health benefits of weight loss are well documented, the resulting sagging skin is an unfortunate side effect. Often, individuals who complete their weight loss and exercise program are very happy with their final weight, however they would like to have the excess skin removed so that their clothing fits smoothly and they can wear a bathing suit again.

We now have excellent techniques for reshaping your body with surgery designed to remove excess skin and tighten the underlying tissues. The breasts, abdomen, hips, buttocks, thighs and arms can all be addressed with these procedures. Many individuals require only one or two of these areas to be treated and this can often be accomplished in one surgical procedure. Some patients wish to return for a second operation to address additional areas. All of these procedures are performed in a fully accredited hospital, and overnight stays are available if required.

I enjoy providing the body contouring procedures for my patients as they reward themselves for their hard work and great accomplishment. You can make a convenient appointment for a no-charge cosmetic consultation by calling my office at 913.451.3722.
