Tummy Tuck
Description of Tummy Tuck
Abdominoplasty, known more commonly as a “tummy tuck,” is a surgical procedure to remove excess skin and fat from the middle and lower abdomen and to tighten the muscles of the abdominal wall.
The procedure can dramatically reduce the appearance of a protruding abdomen and, in some cases, restore weakened or separated muscles. But bear in mind, it does produce a permanent scar.

Tummy Tuck Benefits
A tummy tuck can:
- Tighten loose abdominal muscles and remove excess skin caused by heredity, multiple pregnancies, prior surgery, significant fluctuations in weight or congenital spine abnormalities that affect posture;
- Create an abdominal profile that is firmer and smoother, often enhancing your body image and confidence;
- Improve your body contour by removing unwanted skin and fat also known as the”abdominal apron”.
Preparing for your Tummy Tuck
You will begin the process with a doctor consultation where you will be asked many questions to ensure you are a good candidate for the abdominoplasty procedure. Medical history, physical, likely outcomes and potential risks, are a few examples of topics that will be discussed during consultation.
Lab testing and medications are also completed as part of procedure preparation. The procedure will be conducted at a licensed surgical center in the Kansas City metropolitan area.
Tummy Tuck FAQ
HOW DO I KNOW I AM A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR A TUMMY TUCK?
We recommend our patients be in good health and non-smokers to ensure successful healing. We also recommend our tummy tuck patients to be close to the ideal weight for their body type and size, are moderately fit and overall, have good muscle tone.
If you are considering future pregnancies you may want to postpone a tummy tuck.
Patients should be seeking removal of loose and sagging skin and/or strengthening weakened muscles in addition to removing excess fat. If excess fat is the only factor we recommend you consider a liposuction, or to schedule a consultation so we can help you understand your options.
HOW LONG WILL TUMMY TUCK RECOVERY TAKE?
Following all doctors’ instructions is essential to successful recovery. You will need someone to drive you home following the procedure and stay with you the first night.
You must avoid bending, straining or lifting anything for several days. Discomfort is common following the procedure but a return to light, normal activity is possible as soon as you feel ready, usually within a few days of surgery.
Initial wound healing may take 5 to 10 days and most of our patients are able to return to work within a few weeks, as long as it doesn’t require heavy lifting or vigorous exercise. You must practice diligent sun protection until the healing process is fully complete, which may take several weeks.
WHAT ARE THE LONG-TERM EFFECTS OF A TUMMY TUCK?
It may take a year or more for incision lines to improve. The scars will diminish in color but they never go away. The good news is your clothing and swimsuits should be able to be hide your scars.
WILL MY NEW “TUMMY” LAST FOREVER?
Your new body contour should last as long as you maintain your weight and general fitness. As your body ages, you may find that some firmness is lost, however the loss should be minimal.
